OUR STORY

Games are a powerful vehicle for helping people connect across differences such as race, gender, language, and more. They serve as an invitation that helps both parties come together and share in a way that opens up and creates space for connection.

How S.P.A.R.K. was Born

The S.P.A.R.K. Founder, Rachel Rosen, came up with the idea for SPARK 4 Community on an index card back in 2016 while she and her wife were on vacation. Being in an interracial lesbian relationship, they talked about cultural differences all the time.

After attending a family function, Rachel was looking for games and resources that help facilitate inclusive conversations for diverse groups, and she couldn’t find anything. So, in creating the original index-card game, Rachel’s intention was to create a way to spark inclusive conversations, break down barriers, and break through to a better tomorrow. One conversation at a time.

The more she talked about it, the more Rachel realized that other people were craving the kind of connections she was. So, the first video Rachel ever recorded was for a “Cards for Humanity” Kickstarter campaign. A few months later, they raised $4,320, thanks to a group of 80 backers.

Later that year, they released our first 200 card decks and had a launch party. Everyone wanted to know what was next. “What WAS next?!”, they asked.

The Evolution

So much happened after that which led to Rachel being invited to speak on stages and share the SPARK story.  She was blown away by how much people resonated with the story and the need for SPARK.

After being asked more and more questions about the SPARK approach, Rachel developed the S.P.A.R.K. acronym to make it easy to remember.

Fast forward to today, S.P.A.R.K. is now an umbrella of products and services committed to bringing more empathy, equity, and inclusion to the world, serving and supporting many different industries.

The S.P.A.R.K. Game Today

The S.P.A.R.K. game holds space for people to have deeper conversations about what is going on in the world. It is used to strengthen bonds and spark connections between people that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.

We have physical decks available for purchase and are continuously updating our decks based on the feedback from our community.
